The Story...
The Burden of puberty dawns on the ears of music lovers everywhere revealing what appears to be somewhat of a hangover. Young Americans intoxicated on the swooning faces and manufactured beats of "boy band pop" are once again turning to the rock gods of old in search of divine intervention. Radio 1 has come to champion them. A trip through Radio 1's set list feels more like a crash course in rock music rather than the average hardcore and punk sounds so dominant in their San Diego stomping grounds. Yet, the alternative/power pop label they have been given is not one they reject, but rather embrace wholeheartedly. "We've been influenced by a lot of different bands and people . . . everything from The Foo Fighters and Weezer to Aerosmith and The Who . . . we're definitely into BIG guitar riff rock!" says singer Mark Todd. Armed with their harmonies and "Big" guitar sounds, Radio 1 has set out to earn their proverbial rock n' roll spurs in the clubs of southern California, picking up support all the way. Radio 1 formed in late August 2000 much to the surprise of the four long time friends. "All of us have known each other for a long time and worked our way around in other bands. It just sort of came together and made perfect sense" says guitarist Michael Daley. The band consists of Mark Todd (guitar and lead vocals), Michael Daley (guitar and vocals), Ryan Daley (drums) and Dave Garcia (bass guitar). Things began to happen fast for the band early on. For their debut performance, the band took first place at the Legendary "Belly Up" taverns spotlight San Diego competition. The prize money served to fund their first venture into the studio with veteran engineer Don Lithgow, whose past credits include (but are not by far limited to . . . ) Blink 182, New Found Glory and Incubus. The result of those sessions landing them a track on the forthcoming "Xposer" compilation by Impact Studios Inc. So dust off the old leather jacket and turn the stereo back up! Somewhere right now the four members of Radio 1 are claiming one more victory in the name of catchy hooks and loud guitars. Junk pop rock n' roll has a few new songs to sing.
